AT#562 – Travel to Northern Arizona

Travel to Northern Arizona - What to see including 6 National Parks

Hear about travel to Northern Arizona as the Amateur Traveler talks to journalist Mark Smith about his recent road trip to beautiful Northern Arizona including half a dozen different parks in the National Park system.

We start our tour of Northern Arizona in Phoenix and drive to the beautiful town of Sedona which is known for its red rocks. Sedona has a New Age feel so it’s a great place if you want your chi adjusted or the latest crystals, but it’s also great place just for some nice hiking in beautiful scenery.

North of Sedona is the beautiful wooded Oak Creek Canyon. Between Sedona and Flagstaff you’ll find a few different national parks preserving Indian ruins. Montezuma’s Castle is like a smaller, much smaller, version of Mesa Verde in Colorado, and Tuzigoot is a hilltop ruin. Both of these are from the Sinagua people (which literally means without water).

Nearby to Flagstaff you’ll find three other National Parks worth a visit: Willow Creek Canyon National Monument, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, and Wupatki National Monument. Sunset Crater is a volcanic park where the Apollo astronauts trained in part to prepare them for the moon. Both Willow Creek and Wupatki have more Native American ruins.

Mark and his wife also visited Grand Canyon National Park. Mark tells us of a few places they found to beat the crowds in this beautiful but often crowded park.

Antelope Canyon, located by page Arizona, is a Navajo national park we have mentioned on the show before. It is one of the most beautiful slot canyons in the world. You can’t take a good picture in Antelope Canyon, then it’s time to put your camera up on eBay.

Flagstaff is a beautiful city and quite small compared to Phoenix. It is at altitude and so it’s also probably much cooler than you would expect, even in the heat of summer.

Come join us on a road trip to Northern Arizona. It is an area that is iconic, beautiful, and sometimes quite surprising.
