AT#572 – Travel to the Lofoten Islands of Norway

Travel to the Lofoten Islands of Norway, what to do and see on a 4 day itinerary in this beautiful archipelago, 150 miles above the Arctic Circle

Hear about travel to the Lofoten Islands of Norway as the Amateur Traveler talks to David Nikel, author of the Moon guide to Norway, about one of his favorite regions in that beautiful country.

David says, “We are going to the very far north of Norway to the Lofoten Islands. If you look on a map of Norway, about 150 miles north of the Arctic Circle is a strip of islands that are sticking out of the west coast and that’s the Lofoten Islands. I spent the best part of 18 months researching the book, traveling all over Norway. The scenery, the environment of Norway is outstanding. When you get to Lofoten it just steps up a level. The mountains are more dramatic. The scenery is more spectacular. The fishing villages are more picturesque. It’s quieter than the fjords. It gets very busy in the month of July but in general it’s a quieter place. It’s a perfect place to relax, to unwind. It’s attracted creatives over the years: painters, writers, artists, photographers, filmmakers, and so on, but it’s also a great destination for anyone interested in a more active holiday. The hiking opportunities are some of the best in Norway. For most people there is a memory they will take away from Lofoten.”

David takes us on a road trip through this chain of islands which would take around 4 days to cover. All the islands we cover are connected by bridges. We talk about beautiful beaches, great hikes, staying in part of a fishing village, art galleries and an ice bar.

Come find out what made David fall in love with this beautiful part of Norway.
